I would suggest that you do an online search for guesthouses or cheaper hotels. They will do deals for longer stays which gives you time to hunt around. Type "cheap accommodation Hanoi" into your search engine or try the many websites like trip advisor etc.
Also look in the housing section of the forum in the green banner at the top of this page.

The appropriate way to proceed, is to drop your ad in the Housing in Hanoi section.
There is also the new option 'subscribe' which will allow you to have updates about your request.
