I love the Vietnamese people always with smiling face and no regrets sign on their faces, a warm and positive attitude of life. The most of the tourist places are well maintained and very much tourist friendly behaviour without any vested interest.

I don't see any Vietnamese with smiling faces here in HCMC.


Hello Andy, did you go to the war museum? yes, it is hard to see smiling face there dear. Go to bar, order 1/2 full glass of wine or beer that you like, life would be better.

I'm not saying I have a bad life here (I'm married here).

I'm always honest (not the usual tourist blather about the wonderful people and culture here) and I just say what I see here every day. In the elevator, on the streets, in the restaurants, in the shops, on the street markets, etc.).

Maybe I have to post some photos to show what I mean.

It's annoying to see the "zero interest of anything" visages in the restaurants or at the cash registers of the shops all the time.

But as I've always said, I can come to terms with the situation, because when I'm at home with my family, it makes the other insignificant.

Personally, I find the Thai people much more polite and happy, although many say that the Thai smile is only superimposed.  And what is here? I don't see any difference except that the Thais at least try to be polite to foreigners.

So open your eyes and be honest.
Everything is in the eye of the beholder.

When you put on pink glasses you see everything a little different.  It was the same with me in the early days of Vietnam.

But you can be sure that I don't need alcohol to feel good.

Oh and by the way I always say that it is worse here in HCMC and can be different in other places.

We have a lot of happy Vietnamese friends and we don’t see any difference between the Australian public/shop keepers etc, before we left AU to those in Vietnam...

For me, life in Việt Nam is merely OK. The main advantage is, if you want to live in the tropics of Southeast Asia, it's not as bad as the other countries in the region, many of which are basket cases. So by comparison, VN is the big winner for stability, economy, development, progress, friendly people and general lack of hassles.

It often occurs to me to leave VN and I have done so three times already, but the question of where to move to is a difficult one. At least with VN, I know that I can stay here, get plenty of sleep and lose weight.

If all things were equal though in terms of visas and cost of living, I'd probably still be living in Laos.

I will admit, this sometimes works for me, though it may take a full minute of a smiling stare to get the other person to drop their glare and grab a grin.

It's definitely a choice I must consciously make,  with no guarantee it will work.

So when I'm feeling defensive or anxious, the next-best thing I do is just shrug it off as not being worth me returning the stare.
