Taxi Options at Tan Son Nhat Airport - Any Recommendations

Contem talk

Hello everyone,

I recently experienced some difficulty getting a taxi or Grab ride immediately upon arrival at Tan Son Nhat Airport. After booking a Grab, the driver asked me to walk to the parking lot, which was a bit inconvenient—especially considering that the airport charges customers for parking as well. The pathway to the parking area isn’t very smooth, making it troublesome for passengers carrying multiple luggage.

It’s relatively easy to walk to the end of the terminal to find VinFast taxis, but their service isn’t as reliable as Grab, and the same goes for other major taxi providers.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you have any suggestions for getting a taxi more easily from the airport?

Some hotels offer transfer services, maybe worth checking with them.

But agreed, getting a Grab at the airport is a slightly inconvenient option, though still my favorite.

Twice I had someone at the parking lot trying to grab my phone out of my hand pretending to be my driver.

For domestic arrivals it's in the parking garage, which feels even more chaotic, but at least it's out of the sun..

Alternatively I've tried Mai Linh and Vinasun. Still a bit of a hit or miss, use the official taxi stand all the way to the left at arrivals.

Indeed, Grab, Be etc. have specific areas for searching passengers, you have no other choice than to go to the specific parking lot.

Note that XanhSM (VinFast) taxis are as reliable as Grab and often cheaper.

I prefer Xanh taxi. They are nicer and drive much smoother "typically but not always". Cars usually smell nice too instead of a musty old toyota lol.

I don't understand how airport parking fees charged to GRAB drivers affect "convenience"...?

There is a difference between booking a "GRAB Car“ and a “GRAB Taxi“, with the taxis having more flexibility regarding what they charge you.

Are you saying that the driver collected the parking fee from you separately?

Yes, that's definitely a consideration when deciding if you want to make the trek to the parking garage.

Since I'm intermittently partially handicapped (depending upon the pain level in my low back, hips and knees and feet) I usually arrange for a private driver I've known since 2019 to come and pick me up.

He parks his car in the parking structure then comes to meet me in the terminal. He carries all of my bags with him back to his car, making it very easy for me to walk along with him.

It's not the cheapest option but it's certainly the most convenient, especially when I have a friend or family member arriving at the airport.

My niece recently flew in from Thailand, the day before I was due to arrive in HCMC (SGN) from Đà Nẵng. She said in all of her international travels it was the safest and easiest arrival she'd ever experienced.

Anyone coming into the country for the first time who doesn't know a private driver can usually arrange one with their hotel or other lodging. Even when it's not free/complimentary, that's often the best option.

As long as a person has become reasonably informed regarding normal rates, they can negotiate the fee ahead of time. I've got a number of personal stories of having done that in a few different cities.

(NOTE: a person can become surprisingly well informed by asking AI to figure out the reasonable fare for a private driver)

The government has made it very clear that the future of transportation in Vietnam is going to be electric, as much and as quickly as possible (that should take this thread down an off-topic rabbit hole... 😉)

It wouldn't surprise me to see the Vinfast electric taxis being given priority in the queue over gas-powered cars. Also I'm guessing that we have some people reading through these threads who consider an electric car to be a high priority, perhaps more important than maximum savings...?

It might be worth mentioning here (for those who haven't used a taxi in Vietnam or a GRAB rideshare) that "reliability" refers mainly to being taken to your destination by the shortest and most affordable route, as well as being charged only the fair legal fare on a meter that hasn't been tampered with.

Those are two very valid concerns in all Vietnam cities. If I were taking a taxi I would definitely only choose Taxi Mai Linh or a Vinfast Electric.

I have never had a problem with a Mailinh or Vinasun taxi. The number of cabs companies that try to make their cabs *look* like Vinasun taxis is kinda funny: white cars with green and red details and "Vina" somewhere in the name is the way they go. If you're aware of the difference, you'll not be fooled.

I always take a Grab car *to* the airport and always take a taxi away from SGN. I've never had a cab try to overcharge me. SGN to District 1 in the range of 120,000 VND. A Grab *to* the airport from District 1, especially in peak hours, can be more than that, maybe even 220,000 because of congestion/demand pricing on the app.

It's great to hear about your experience! Having a private connection for airport pickup and drop-off is definitely convenient, but not everyone has access to that service—especially travelers who aren't well-connected locally.

As for airport terminal fees, I believe vehicles are charged a parking or entry fee once they enter the area, and Grab likely includes those costs in their fare breakdown for customers. I'm not entirely sure if that's the case, but it seems like a common.

Taxi fares have become much more transparent compared to 10–15 years ago. With today's technology, drivers can't overcharge or take unnecessary distance like before. I remember paying 600K VND for a quick trip from the airport to District 1 a long time ago—prices were quite different back then!
