Vietnam, a welcoming destination to expats?

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Settling in Vietnam, like every new environment, can feel like stepping into the unknown and brings many questions: how will it go, how to integrate successfully, etc.
To help smooth this transition, we invite you to share your experience since you landed in Vietnam, whether recently or a long ago:

What was your first impression when you arrived?

Did you face any challenges while integrating? Any advice on how to overcome them?

Are there any support programs, groups or events to help newcomers settle in?

Do you find it easy to make friends or connections with locals and fellow expats?

What makes Vietnam a welcoming destination for expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

What was your first impression when you arrived?

Been to many places but Vietnam truly was one of the first places that really felt different. Very raw, very unfiltered. I loved it. Thats the best way I know to describe it.

Did you face any challenges while integrating? Any advice on how to overcome them?

Language of course and finding out how things are done. There isnt a lot of clear guidance on how to do much of anything that involves official stuff and to be honest most locals didnt know much at all. Getting paperwork done often resulted in visiting many different places to be told to go here, no go here, no go to this place, you have the wrong paperwork use this, no thats wrong again use this, wrong place again go back to the first place.

Are there any support programs, groups or events to help newcomers settle in?

Tons of them. You just have to be careful what groups you join.

Do you find it easy to make friends or connections with locals and fellow expats?

Oh yes 100%

What makes Vietnam a welcoming destination for expats?

Vietnam has to be one of the most welcoming places in the world. Ive never been to such a friendly place especially once you get out of the touristy areas.

Dont come here expecting or trying to force Vietnam to be what you want it to be. This place operates different than a lot of other places and thats ok. Thats what makes it wonderful. Become Vietnamese, dont expect Vietnam to become western.
