Living in Thai

Andreia Cruz

Hello, my name is Andréia, I'm Brazilian, I'm going to live in Thailand in September for two years at first, with my husband and two small children. I'd like tips for living in Thailand. My children will study at Wells International School. I have no idea what it's like to live in such a different country. The weather just seems to be hot. I'll live in Bankok. I appreciate the attention.

tips ... the list is endless ... first don't live in BKK ... too expensive ... bad air ... to much traffic ... good luck I live here permanently ... but far from tourist areas or BKK ... so it is very quiet and nice and safe ... and air is much better ... but then I have a Thai family also for support which helps alot ... not an option for you ...

Welcome and good luck. Two years might not be long enough to fully appreciate Thailand on the whole but it's a good start. I been here for a decade and can't see myself ever leaving at this point. I find the Thai people kind and welcoming. Take note that driving here you must become a tiny fish in a large school of fish moving along.

I have been married to a Thai for 9 years so , not just here for 2 years, bought a house 5 years ago cash
like the Thai life with Thai family , no foreign friends or neighbors ... eat home cooked meals almost everything day , or street fair picked up around town for 35-55 baht per meal , no smoking , no drinking  just a nice quiet life at home , ... works for me and a nice steady income that exceeds my expenditures ... love the food and the close knit family life wth nieces and nephews to hand ... far better and cheaper than the 4 cities I have lived in in america , upstate NY, Seattle, Phoenix, Buffalo, here on a retirement visa no income tax , no mandatory health insurance, no property taxes ...  what comes in I get to keep or spend ., 2 never ending government retirements with built in COLAs, 18  months in and several million baht in the bank cash .... plus a paid off house ... about as good as it gets

I met my wife in California. We spent 30 years living and working there. But we always new that we would retire to Thailand. We visit every year for 10 years. My wife has a big family and they were very supportive of us moving to Thailand. We made the move in 2013. But before we moved we bought a new condo and had it paid off by the time we moved. For the first 2 years I had serious culture shock, not being able to read or write Thai, or speak very well. But once we settled into really living there and getting close with the family everything got better for me. In the beginning we had planned on going back and forth but as time went on By I started to feel more comfortable in Thailand.  My friends had moved on with there lives. And it was very expensive to visit every year. We were thinking of returning for a visit in 2022, but now I find myself making excuses not to return. We both Love Thailand, it’s safer here for us than the US and much less expensive. Last time we returned in 2019 we felt like everyone had attitude problems and were rude to us. But we found out later that this is the norm for the lifestyle in California now. We have so much freedom and enjoyment in Thailand am glad we made the right decision for our retirement. We lay low don’t talk about politics and we have a very happy life.

I with my Thai wife who lived in the US for 6 years has no interest in going back, also partly because of the cost , but it cultural now ... yes the US is rude and crude versus living here, and the energy required to muster , plus now the covid passport ... what an idea to have to go through 2 airports with their associative rules and stuff ... probably not going to happen again ... 67 and happy to be here permanently

Hi Warat, here is a question for you: in your opinion is it a good idea to live in Chaing Mai when the air is so bad for months from burning season? I want to move there in a couple of years but worry about the health risks.
Thank you, Anya

JayEsCee

The burning season is only a couple of months a year. Actually, I would wear the mask more for burning season than for covid-19.  There have been mask mandates all through Thailand due to air pollution in recent years. However, as bad as burning season is in Thailand, it is nowhere close to the yellow dust problem in China and Korea during late March and April.
