Moving to KL in March 2013

ruchaw

Hi there,

My Spouse (30) and myself (28) are relocating to KL from Singapore for his job(possibly a pet dog) in March 2013. We are both Indians and have been living in Singapore for 2 yrs. His office is going to be around 'Petaling Jaya Selangor Darul Ehsan, Selangor, 46100, Malaysia.'

I don't have a work contract yet, will it be hard for me to find work? I am currently an Art Director & Designer in Singapore.

I need few queries to be answered as well some information. Please suggest me which are the good localities/condos around my husband's office to find us safe and clean accommodation with competitive rates and easy accessibility.

What should be our ideal expense depending on that we are still not parents with a descent lifestyle(lot scope for entertainment)?

Any information you have about moving to KL and your experiences would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome -  your "area" is the bigger than the size of Singapore! You need to give what sections otherwise no one can help.

As for expense well assuming no children no car (public transport in KL is a disgrace - you will miss Singapore - you will prob need a car) then say rent 2k then another 2k for food, bills (easy 500 RM a month for aircon softies!) and things like medical, toiletries all those basics. A car add 1,500 RM per month ( hired).

What surprised me last visit to singapore was how cheap Singapore food was in relation to KL was. Ten years ago Singapore was expensive. But KL prices have shot up. So be careful with cost of living. 4k isn't luxury. And most people spend twice what they budget and never know it - as most never check properly. Clothes, electronics all rose sort of things add up as well.

Art designers don't earn much in KL - Chinese get more as lots of Chinese speaking clients and in Malaysia rascism is rampant. If you are good work is there. But it's dominated by Chinese style design (I asked some design grads here what they learnt. "how to copy was the answer". They knew none of the great painters or designers. No creativity just copy well. Not very stimulating. Adding....pay 3-6k per month.

If you have children add 2-3k per month per child as bare min (cheapest school fees).

Hello Nemodot....Thankyou for your feedback with such details. About what section of the area we would prefer to stay.....have no clue AT ALL. Will be glad if you suggest few names with the pros n cons, that would be of great help.

As I said it is like asking "what part of UK to stay in" impossible to answer! PJ is MASSIVE as in a city. Well it is a city actually! it depends where your husband will be working

So that's near section 14 but on the other side PJ new town area, very busy place. There is close to Jalan 51 few good condos PJ8 which is the newset (but small units), Istara and Menara Jaya (which both have proper units and lots of expats). Also Millennium is close but that's not so good. I have stayed in Menara Jaya for almost two years in past years.
Also there is houses available in Section 14 and Section 5/9 that are okay, all are near.
