Is EPF Tax Deductible for first 6 months

barrycaffrey

Hi All,

I moved to Malaysia to work in September 2012.

I was wondering if my EPF monthly contributions are tax deductible for 2012. I believe I have to complete an e-M form online, but there is no mention under deductions for Pension contributions.

I have queried this with the Tax Dept online, but am awaiting a response. I am running out of time to meet the 30 April 2013 filing deadline and am too tight to consult a Tax Agent, having been quoted a fee of RM 1,000.

Cheers.

Hi barrycaffrey,

I am also surprised to learn that foreigners are also contributing to EPF. I will suggest you call and speak with the Income Tax Officer directly for a clear guidance. Their toll free no is: 1 800 88 5436.

Hi you don't have to. If you volunteer to do so employer contributions are set at min 5 rm per month. a few add a lot more as a bonus.

For most expats not worth it

I am a foreigner and 11% of my salary goes into epf and the company adds 12%. the diff is that it is compulsory for locals but optional for foreigners. but I only get it when I leave Malaysia. that amount is also not tax deductible. I actually think that makes sense to be a part of this scheme. you have savings :-)

Barry, there's an online form u need to fill up and its quite simple. its a bit cumbersome the first time but try to get your hr to help you. 1000 bucks for something so simple. jeez.
