He is a Beautiful Man!

chrisck9

Hello Friends

I know this might not be the normal subject being discussed in an ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Forum but I would like to seek different opinions from people all over the world.  This 17 years old Iranian young man need to master English within 6 months for him to join his uncle in UK. He asked me this question.

What is your interpretation of 'He is a beautiful man'? Is that acceptable in proper and correct English?

He insisted that his English language teacher told him that the word beautiful may apply to animals, things, women, etc but not men.

Loves to hear your thoughts.

Thanks & Cheers :)
Chris

I'm English, and it's something that you would never, never hear in the UK. A man would be described as handsome or good looking, a lady as beautiful or pretty.
If your friend wants any help with his English get him to send me a PM. I am happy to help.

While I agree that men don't usually refer to other men as being beautiful, there's nothing wrong with anyone describing a man as such, and it's wrong to say it never happens or shouldn't be used.  It depends on the context of the conversation, and who's saying it.... members of the gay community, or mostly, women talking about men in general.
However, the word "gorgeous" (as well as the other descriptive words) is more widely used by women to describe how they feel about men, how they look, their personality etc. but you can, and people do use the word "beautiful" to describe men, so I say, if that's how you feel, use it!

I dont know about the grammar much, but, hearing about a man that hes beautiful gives a very nice sound to me. Its like as if someones seen inside a man just having a glance at him !

The trueness of this, neglects the grammar to me !

Collocation rules...
The word 'beautiful man' is rarely used but if it is used it would imply that the man had feminine features.

Wow, I am so excited to share all your precious feedback with my young friend.

Personally, I guess I have to agree with kuilao :)

There is nothing wrong by using the word beautiful to man or handsome to woman. I feel that in order to express something, words usage should not be restricted!

Thanks so much for your opinions.

I would agree as well with Kuilao, for me it can easily be associated with parts on a man´s body but also to his inside qualities; and to a great deal depending on the situation and circumstances...

Nice topic to discuss, the next one should be about women... :)

When I hear the words "he's a beautiful man" I don't see a problem. Beautiful does not always relate to physical appearance. Beautiful also describes the inner qualities of a person. The soul. I could say that the Dalai Lama is a beautiful person and most people would know what I am talking about. Only uneducated and narrow minded people would think in a derogatory sexual way.

If Elton John describe his partner as a beautiful man that is right  i suppose.
If George Bush says Obama  is a beautiful man then we have a problem.
Sins you are learning English you are better of like He Is A Good man and let your wife describe you to her friends that "my husband is a beautifully man" would be ok.

Hi,

The term "Beautiful Man" is not gramatically incorrect...  However, it does imply that the man has soft, baby-like or feminine features.  "Beautiful Boy" is probably a bit more common than "beautiful man".

In fact, the first time I heard the phrase "Handsome woman" I laughed my head off... Later, I learned that it was correct too...

Though off-topic, this was an interesting question...
