Keeping and running my business in Australia

mblythe

Hello my name is Mark and I live in regional Victoria in Australia. I am 67 and self employed. and would like to shift to Bali within the next 2 years. This may appear a foolish question but, here goes.

If I managed to obtain a retirement visa would I still be permitted to keep and run my business in Australia?

Obviously I would not be employed while in Bali.

TIA Mark

You can do whatever you want in your home country- just keep quiet about it in Bali.

As long as you stick to the visa rules, you're spending money so nobody will care.

However, I would avoid Kuta and areas like it.

Way too many drunks and druggies

Welcome to the Forum Mark. Nothing to stop you doing that. Of course you will still have to pay tax to the Australian govt. As I understand it both countries are signed up to a double taxation avoidance agreement. Naturally you cannot elect to pay tax to the Indonesian govt if you don't have a work visa.

If you are eligible for an Australian pension (unlike most western countries the Australian state pension is means tested) you will not be able to claim this in Bali until you have been retired for two years in Oz and I believe is not index linked to inflation if taken overseas. Presumably you will have your self employed superannuation to fall back on.
