Possible relocation to HK

rmaccuswell

Read quite a bit on the forums but have some questions, some answered but older info, some new.

My wife and I may be relocating to Hong Kong for work. We will both be working in a university if it works out. Salaries will be about $70K (both together) with a housing allowance of $12K each.

We will have the two of us (of course!), two daughters 14 and 5 and a dog and cat. (Older daughter is fluent in Chinese, Mandarin and Cantonese,  and attended school in China through grade 4)

Work would be in Kowloon but open to living in mos places.(Used to an hour commute anyway)

What areas would your recommend looking for housing? No issues being in a high rise, but also ok out in New Territories or DB.  Would prefer a 3br. Would also like to have live in help so either help quarters or a 4br. (this would be due to both of us working and commuting. Must accept pets.

Any input on schools. As I said our oldest is was in a Chinese school in Guangzhou through Grade 4 so we would be open to her being in a HK public school. Youngest is starting Kindergarden so most likely an International school.

Typical monthly costs for a family of 4, we would intend to eat at home in evenings with only the occasional night out.

Octopus card/travel for adults and for students. Any info?

Any other advice that you could offer would be appreciated.

Kowloon has many places to rent and not as crowded as Hong Kong Island but still crowded compared to Miami. For around 20 to 25,000 HK Dollars you can end up with a 900 Sq Ft place with a community pool and a gym. For 10,000 Dollars you get four walls and 500 SQ FT at most.
