i think beijing is a safe city itself.

All suburbs are safe to live in in Beijing, that's the beauty of the place when it comes to having kids! I have no idea of what your budget is, or what you would call "cheap", but there are quite a number of areas around Dong Zhi Men Wai Da Jie that have quiet neighbourhoods, or with compounds that have good facilities for children to play on.

Tiananmen is in the centre of Beijing. Generally, further from Tiananmen it will be cheaper.

Cheap = areas with very few expats.
Cheap = less favourable area (further from subway.
Cheap = older building or further from downtown
Cheap = less bedrooms.
Cheap = small kitchen.

What is your budget? Do you have a car? then can say where might be suitable. My part of town is great, but I am basically the only foreigner here and I drive.

hey,my friend,as a real estate consultant in Beijing,I think Wangjing and Shijingshan are two better surburbs in Beijing.But they have different features.Wangjing develops better and has more foreigners than Shijingshan. I can tell you that Beijing is a much safer place than cities in the UK.

I have visited twice and I never heard a siren !! And there seems to be no anti-social problems like we have in the UK. I guess that residents of Beijing may agree/disagree with me but I found it safe to go out at night anywhere.

UK or Beijing to live ? For me Beijing wins every time
