Live music in Nairobi

Hi, as many newcomers have discovered, Nairobi has a lot to offer re live music. J's in Westlands on Thursdays, K1 some nights, Black Diamond Sundays, Rhumba at weekends in Upper Hill, Tree House and many more. I know that many expats and Kenyans who want to go out at night to both TALK and PARTY are a bit fed up with the club scene where DJs just pump out extremely loud and monotonous hiphop or similar music and most guests are not able to keep a conversation without shouting. There must be thousands of such places in Nairobi county. Even young people have started complaining. I just wanted to inform newcomers who might be interested in a great African music style called Lingala or Rhumba. Across from Mater Hospital in the industrial area there is a club hidden behind a petrol station,聽 called Dream Village. Every Wedn and throughout tge weekend you get fantastic genuine Rhumba from the Kinshasha band Bilenge Musica du Congo. I go there often and i always wonder why I never see any other wazungu there. If you take an uber there you will be very safe. No one walks around there at night of course. If you want to know more pls contact me.

Great! Just know that the interior is old fashioned. When you enter you think nothing has changed since 1980. Which has it's charm.

I went to K1 Klubhouse on a Saturday night some weeks back and they had a great band on. Really good quality band with a great sounding PA which makes a difference.

I sometimes go to a place in town called Simmers聽 in Town which have a good Congolese band 7 nights a week, unfortunately the clientele can be a bit seedy so I have tended to avoid the place.聽

I will checkout Dream Village for sure.

Amazing, I also go to simmers n k1 but hv not been to simmers for a while due to the fact at tyms am alone n those ladies tend to put drugs on drinks feeling dizzy 馃樀, then robbed.

To be frank, Simmers is a place where the queens of the night (to put it politely) go to meet foreigners. It is and has for many years been, a seedy place. BUT, like you say the rhumba band is great, at least it was last time I passed by. So, Andrew, if you like Congolese lingala without girls pushing you from every angle, Dream Village is the place. The band there is even a level above the one which I remember from Simmers. And it's a much safer place for your pockets.
I you want a place around Westlands, Pots and Palms at Office Park on Riverside Drive is lively with live rhumba on Thursdays and am told Satos.

Yes, K1 is good for live music. I think they still do live Jazz on Tuesdays and another live on Sundays. Wednesdays used to be rhumba by a DJ. My problem with K1 is that they turn up the volume so loud that you need to go out in their beer garden to talk. But for drinking and dancing wild it's top.

Has anyone been to a club on Upper Hill, called Meladen? It is supposed to have live rhumba at weekends, but I have never been there.
