Work in Ethiopia for accompanying spouses

SSL

I will be moving to Ethiopia to work for a UN agency, with my husband and child accompanying me. I have heard that it can be difficult for spouses- regardless of whether they are well qualified or not- to find work there because of the preference for hiring national staff (quite rightly!) and the visa requirements. My husband would also be looking for work in International Development.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this issue?

My apologies if this question has already been asked and asnwered- I didnt find anything on this question in the forum.

Thank you in advance.

Yes it is quite difficult for a foreign spouse to get a work permit. However, networking may help you in identifying short term assignments and consultancy with some diplomatic missions as well as with international agencies.

Do not forget to contact international schools and language schools, might you have some languages skills.

Hope this helps

Good luck
