Moving to Cairo.... Need help!

Ktduggal

Hi,
I will be moving to Cairo within the next 2 months with my husband whose office is located in the corniche...I have a couple of questions and would really appreciate if someone can help me ....
1. Which place is better to consider for renting an apartment/ villa ... With minimum travel time to the corniche ... Heliopolis / Maadi / Zamalek  ? Our budget is maximum 3000 usd per month.

2. What kind of housing can I expect in this range ?  Also which is the most expat friendly area....

3. Where can I find the list of realtors ? I mean how should I go about finding the place ?

Please give me your suggestions and the things i must consider while renting out a place.

Many thanks!
Kt.

Hey KT.

do you know where on the Corniche exactly? It runs through a number of areas in Cairo.

Are you coming with a family (that is, small children?) If so, Maadi is a great area to consider. There is less traffic and congestion there, and a number of schools in the immediate area.

If it's just the two of you, and he's working along the Zamalek Corniche, you could find a place to rent in Zamalak. Your budget is quite high considering price of rentals, so you should be able to find a really nice place.

There are flats along the Corniche in Maadi that offer great views of the city, that are well furbished inside, and would fall neatly within your price range. Not to mention, you go up a couple of floors, and the noise from the traffic essentially can disappear.

It really depends on what you're looking for, flats or villa. While still in Cairo (8 months ago) I found a villa in Maadi, furnished, for 7,000 LE a month. (4 bedroom). This equates out to just over 2.000 U.S. dollars.

Below are a couple of websites that will help you in your search. you can also check bigger names like "Damac," among others.

^^this is a great site to find "expat friendly" rental properties.

Also check out: Íæż½ã½ã Reloc Services, they are located in Maadi. Their contact information is:

They are great, as they are designed to assist in the transition of moving into Cairo, so you can meet people this way, and become acquainted with the transition into Cairo Living.

Thanks Leprechaun for such a spontaneous reply. U have been great ....

I checked out all the links yesterday and it seems that we should be able to find a place in either Maadi or Zamalek. I also really liked katameya heights. The houses there look gorgeous..... I am not sure how many expats live there though... And how far is it from the corniche...

I don't have kids yet...but still do prefer places which have less traffic and parks closeby...

I was under the impression that the rents were very high in Cairo , so I had extended my budget to that amount ... Good to know that you found  a 4 bedroom villa in maadi for around 2 k ....This means I can save more :)

Frankly , we would be looking at 3 bedrooms... And would probably go in for semi furnished... What about you ? Was your villa furnished or semi furnished ?

Where did you move from ? Or are you an Egyptian ?

Haha, about the stress ... Oh... I am a nervous wreck! But shall remember your advice.

Thanks again!

Hey KT. The villa was semi-furnished :) You shouldn't have a problem finding a place like that.

Nope, not egyptian! from Ireland actually. :)

If you need anymore help, don't hesitate to ask. Particularly once you've arrived. Feel free to private message me whenever you need.

Hi MW,

Thanks for your sharing your views... i think you are right, that I should either consider Maadi or Zamalek ... hmmm .. The reson i mentioned Katameya Heights is because i saw a few properties on a website, and just fell in love :) ... although we are likely to have a car and a driver provided by my husband's employer but considering the distance, it might be better if we stay close to his office...

Thanks again!

its about a twenty minute drive on a main roadway from Katameya to Maadi.

Hi,

In which part of the corniche is your husband's work??? cause it's too long from helwan, Maadi thru down town.
However, as an expat, Maadi is the best area for you.
If you need any help, please text me. Even in the renting, I have friends who rent apartments or villas according to your budget.

Regards,
Gihan

Hi Kt,

In case ur hubby will be working in the Nile Tower, then i recommend an apartment in Zamalek .. much closer than Maadi.

In case he's workin in Down Town, Garden City, or Maadi then of course Maadi is the best place.

I have moved myself alot & i can recommend you a relocation company to help u pack, move & unpack ur stuff.

Btw, I work in real estate company &  can email you some pics for apartments in any place within ur budget if you like kt.

Cheers,
Marianna

My company uses homecountryeg.com and they have done well for us.  mahmoud@homecountryeg.com is the guy we deal with the most.

Your budget amount seems right when you add in electricity and so on.

Will you have a car?  If so, ask about a flat with assigned parking.  It's not real easy to find but is available.

(Just noticed the date of your original posting and this is probably too late but will leave it for others to reference).
