Cairo watering holes

mariner11

So where are the good places to go in Cairo?  I enjoy live music but I doubt they play much UK indie music there!

Id like to sample the culture and mix with the locals rather than play in a darts league in an expat club.

Where do people suggest I go to meet other expats in city places rather than at a local expat club?  ie is the a good hangout for travellers etc.

would also be interested in hearing what must sees i should go to.

Most people that go in a restaurant, club, and so on, see about their group, even they don t have a look at the other table, who s there! Maybe this is because of the culture of country: a man should not start a conversation with any person that doesn t know before. A part of expats that live here for a long time behave in this way as Egyptians behave, men are scared not their attitude to be meant in a wrong way.
I am not good enough in "going out " but I use to go sometimes when I have a deal to do in Maadi, street 9 near Sakanat El Maadi metro station, the place name is " 55", and at Cornish Nile near the river at " Fridays"  and I like there.
Now depends on where you live, what you like to find out!
Good luck!
