Well i am about 3 weeks away from finally moving over to Hurghada ( So excited )

Everything else is in order for the move.. then someone asked me recently about food!

I have spent a lot of time in Hurghada and eaten a variety of egyptian dishes.  I intend to do all of my own cooking and preparing meals.  What i need are recipes and advice on what type of pots and pans etc that are widely used to cook certain dishes.

Any advice as to where or how i obtain recipes would be much appreciated.

Heavens - I take it that you are going to arrive in EGypt and collect another 10kg at least then!!
If you want to eat EGyptian - be prepared for the huge amounts of butter / ghee they use - and also bear in mind that everything is boiled / boiled then fried / fried!
Even when making the rice they use an enormous amount of ghee / butter and salt - boy do they like their salt.

Even my husband doesn't eat too much traditional Egyptian food as cooked by his mother / aunts / family - because after a long time living away the amount of fat and salt they use doesn't agree with him (and also the last time he came to visit - before we moved - he came for  montha and put on a few extra kg's due to eating his mothers food)

Hahahaha!!! Honesly, i thought the salt, ghee, sugar etc, was just what my Son-in-law put in to his cooking!!!

The reason i asked for recipes to cook in the egyptian way, was because i just assumed it would be difficult to get certain ingredients etc to cook the way we do in England!

I don't fancy all the ghee and salt at all lol.

I suppose i will just have to wait until i arrive and see what's what

most ingredients are available.

When we go to the UK we normally bring back a small stock of some things that are not available (malt vinegar, oxo, gelatine, some herbs/spices,....... bakewell tarts!!)
If we want a curry I cook it from scratch the same for such things as S&S chicken, etc.
So you can cook virtually the same as at home - it's a good job really!
If I travel out of the country for work - my Husband cooks (and maybe his mother )- I come back and the children are going crazy for a roast dinner and vegetables with gravy - they don't like to eat rice all the time, and don't like everything fried/boiled.  ALthough to be fair my Husbands cooking has evolved and is much more cosmopolitan and more EUropean than it used to be.

And heed my advice - don't ever try to make Mashi!!! My daughter and I tried it once, we took the recipe from my Mother -in-law, and after watching about 4 films whilst making them decided that we would just in future ask my M-I-Law / other relative to make them (they tasted great - but I can think of much better things to do with all that time)!!

Hey Biffy.  It's a relief to know that you can get most ingredients.  I can eat rice and pasta, but i'm not a lover of it.  I'm more of a traditional cook, but love curries also.  If i can do things like spag bol, chilli concarni and the above i will be ok.. but am more than willing to eat egypts traditional dishes .. in moderation, now you warned me of the ghee, butter, salt, sugar etc hahahahaha!!!!

I am looking forward to cooking from scratch ( Much healthier ) lol

I will do curries... Lucy my daughter was on the phone the other day asking for the recipe to cook a curry from scratch, but i said she probably wouldn't be able to get her hands on all the ingredients.

Give me some idea Biffy on what things we tend to use alot of in the UK that i wont be able to get in egypt... i can bring them out with me.

If there are any other tips i should know about.. not neccessarily about cooking.. i would be really grateful... I keep having the odd wobble about the BIG changes  hahahaha!!!!
