Marriage and mahr in Egypt

ToddTodd

Hi everyone. I am islamically married with an Egyptian man for quite a while and we live in Europe, we are about to get married officially now, which is the reason why I came to Egypt. But somehow feel something is off. I read the Egyptian law for foreign marriages and what I see scares me.

1 Husband need to give permission to wife for travelling with children? And he can take the children and go without informing me? This sounds terrifying.

2 Also I was shocked when I read the marriage contract: Mahr of 100egp of which 1egp to be given now, and the rest ( 99 egp)I can have after the divorce. Sounded weird and offensive tbh. I don't need any money anyway me and my husband have started a married life long time ago, but reading the bare minimum is 10.000 looks like something fishy. Where I come from we don't have this tradition so its fine but i dont like lies, and if their rule and customs are like this, why they play around? His sister is a lawyer and she is convincing me that the government takes 10% of the mahr given to the bride, that's why they write little on paper, that this is just a procedure and they do this for everyone.   I research and I don't find anything about this matter online

3 I also asked to write in the contract that I don't accept another wife and they were all shocked that I am well prepared.

I'm curious: are they showing disrespect by these actions? Should I react?

Point #1 is all I would need to have serious second and final thoughts. I wish you happiness.  Also, if Mahr is the same as dowry, I'm willing to bet this is something that was written into legal marriage contracts many, many years ago and has never been updated.  I recall the mention of 100 EGP mentioned in a contract in reviewed.  Lastly, he can have countless Orphi wives and if any of them get pregnant iI dont think there is nothing you can do if he marries her as well.  Egypt exists as a Patriarchy..remember that.

In my opinion, they do not showing disrespect by these actions, but they try to reduce your financial dues that are determined for you by law and that your husband must pay in the event of divorce, such as the dowry and deferred portion, and you must insist on all the conditions that guarantee your rights in the event of divorce.

We live in Europe,so no Orfy marriages.

I'm just curious why the lies? Why they tell me government take 10%  of  the dowry when that's not true?

Where I come from, without these traditions we give so much to the bride, simbolic way to wish her all the best in her new life.

I understand but why its not done with egyptian women if its ok?

@ToddTodd

Attempting to reduce women's rights in marriage is done to foreign and Egyptian wives. This is unfair. Any attempt by the husband to reduce his wife's rights in the event of divorce is unacceptable.

You already know what they are trying to do.  You already don't feel good about it. I wish you all the best with your outcome.

Thanks for your reply, it means a lot to me. The thing is my husband is absent, so his family gave me this contract, I don't think he knows about it, and didn't want to tell him as I want to avoid any fights in the family.

Am I right about the 10% that government take from the mahr? That's a lie right?

@ToddTodd

There are dues must be paid to the state or government in the case of marriage, but they are not 10%. They are less than that and will not exceed 4% of the value of the dowry specified in the document.
