How many times have you moved?

in Russia, life is cheap

Excuse the pun, but that sums up the downside quite accurately as well.

Let's just say that every time a friend moves, I'm the first person they phone for moving/packing tips... I think I've moved 13 times since 1992, although I've now been living in the same place for 6 years, much to my amazement ;)

narain

not counting moves within a city. or vacations etc...

india
usa
india
haiti
usa
Bonn
frankfurt
nepal
austria
sri lanka
morocco...

maneja_adventure

ever since i entered the erasmus mundus, i've lived in:
-angers, france
-piacenza, italy
-valencia, spain
-makati, philippines >>> came back to work
-kiel, germany
-bergen, norway (this march 15, 2010)

i love the experience of european culture. i find it impressive that even though the countries are just side by side (i live in an archipelago, i have no sense of land boundaries), europeans have managed to maintain their individuality ... chapeau!

Peregrine

Hi fellow movers
Wow - I thought I'd lived in quite a few places, but my number pales in comparison to some of you folk.
Here is my list anyway;

England
Brunei
Brazil
Texas, USA
New Zealand

Hmmm, it would look more impressive if I included all the internal/house moves.

Cheers
Peregrine

TimeTraveler

Moved a number of times...didn't realize how much I'd like it until I started really traveling after High School...  I've lived in the US (NM, CA and FL), England, Bahrain, Japan and now Colombia.  Who knows where we'll end up next!  :P

daysontheclaise

3 Houses in the London in 6 years

Then I moved to Sydney (Australia)

From there to Canberra, where I lived in 5 different suburbs over 20 years

Then to Queensland (4 houses in 9 years)

Then back to London (3 houses, 12 years)

Now in France (one house, 18 months, never moving house again, ever)

permatourist

If it's a question of changing countries, my score is five now: Mexico, Argentina (twice), Spain, Mauritius and now Colombia.

holy helga

are you not tired moving around guys? :p i wished i have teleportation.

I've moved several times within Australia due to dad's work! And since they moved on while I was at uni 2nd year, I've still continued to move,....I hate it! I so want to buy a house and stay put but I'm off to GZ in 4weeks time and who knows how long to stay for ( I hope three years), I have a two year old son, so I don 't want him to be constantly moving, however, I don't want him to be like those ppl who only live in one house and can't handle, different or change or challenges!

Wallerawang, Manildra, Brisbane (2x), Syd (10months), Darwin, Melbourne, Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney, Maitland, Melbourne (4 places), Lithgow....... and within each city and town I would have lived in at least 3 or 4 or even more houses, its what happens when you are in shared accommodation! Dogey landlords, creepy house mates, dirty ppl, just very poor living conditions and I'm less tolerant about that now Ih ave a child.

From that I have been to 9schools in total, and two universities, but unis don't really count! Moving between schools and states has big problems here in Aus as each state teachers things differently and at different times! So I was always at a complete disadvantage due to the moves!

And yes Melbourne is my favourite place to live! Ever come here go to Melb! And yes I love cold climates! LOL!

Rukkilill

This is very impressive! I'm embarking on my first BIG move soon. I'm curious: when many of you moved over a great distance, did you ship a lot of your things with you or mostly just sell everything and start over? I'll be moving to the other side of the world and don't want to bring much, but on the other hand I might miss some of my more treasured things. Thanks for sharing!

Vallartina

In total I made more than 20 moves in my life, 3 continents, 7 countries. Hope, I finally arrived!

Aleksandra

Wow! I've moved only once in my life, from one hemisphere to the other though, so the change was drastic, but still once only And it took me so much nerve to sort out everything, to get used to everything, to get over longing for some things I missed at my previous home, that I promised myself to never change homelands again! Really amazaed there are people out there who did it more than 20-30 times! Respect! But then again - I see what appeals to you so much - you can never truly know the country and its people unless you've lived there, two weeks on holiday is so not enough!

Invader_Stu

I moved once from England to Holland but with in Holland I've moved four times. Amsterdam > Haarlem > Weesp > Amsterdam Again > Rotterdam.

Marci2204

Hats down for all you guys who can list everywhere they have lived.

I moved countless times when living in the UK, but the 'big deal' moves were Czech to the UK, a few months work stint in Africa and my latest is UK to Germany.

That's not counting short moves when travelling etc. Hmmm, rather short list compared to some of you. Watch the space ....

MASHfan

I have moved from California (USA) to Casablanca (MOROCCO) to Virginia (USA) to Alabama (USA) back to Casablanca. In a couple of years, I plan to move back to the US, and then to Switzerland. And hopefully my expat life shall really begin then ;)

My parents were insane.  No, I mean crazy.  What I'm trying to say is that they were totally screwed up in the worst psychological ways you could imagine.

For example, my mom had schizophrenia.  She was always convinced that the places we lived in were "possessed by demons."  So we had to move.

By the age of 16, I had moved 49 times.

Try and imagine the impact this would have on the development of an adolescent's psychology.

I never made any friends.  There was no point.  If we stayed long enough for me to learn a few people's names, it didn't matter because I would have to learn a whole new school all over again.

I'm now 29 years old, and lacking any kind of normal history of growing up, I can't relate to "normal" people at all.  This has affected me in fundamental and profound ways.

For example, I have never had a date.  Never kissed a girl.  Never even touched one.  I'm terrified of looking weird in front of girls (because my life has been so weird, and I think they'll notice that I'm not from normal upbringing) and perhaps it's a self-fulfilling prophecy but I have never known a girl that liked me.  I'm a 29 year old virgin, I feel suicidal, have almost no hope for the future, and feel like I'm living in a prison of skin that yearns to be hugged or touched.

So,

Long story short I've moved 61 times total in my life.  Never felt that I belonged anywhere.  If you want to be happy or create a life for yourself, create memories and make friends... STAY PUT.

samcan
