Cost of Medical?

Peanut_oreo

So I was kinda curious about the cost of medicine and treatment in Hanoi. Is it expensive?
For example, how much is the cost for treating a fever?

Wouldn't that depend on what is causing the fever? Some illnesses are more serious, and thus more costly to treat than others. I suggest you ask a more specific question if you want a good answer.

A flu...a common fever. Not that serious ill type.

Just go to some pharmacy. They will give medicines which is below 50.000 VND :D

Just buy some 'Decolgen'(for cold/flu) and 'Panadol'(for fever/head ache) to keep home for emergency use :D

Going to a street corner pharmacy is like playing Russian Roulette.  You tell them you have a headache (in the States, they just give you 1 - 2 Aspirins) and you end up with 5 pills of unknown origin.  You have no idea what effects they have on your system or whether the pills are just placebos (pills that do nothing but the psychological effect on you is that you think they are medicine that will cure/heal you).  You're just going on the word of the "pharmacist".  After hearing stories on how people can BUY (or rent from someone else) pharmacist licenses for 20-40 million VND, I'm not so sure about these pharmacists.

Drug companies here just crank that stuff out like candy and if you die, well, you really can't sue them can you?  (1) You don't know what company made them (2) You're already dead.  Drug companies in the US spend a ton of money on research and testing to make SURE you don't die cuz if you do, your family can sue the crap out of them.

I usually avoid pills here and wait it out any minor ailments I have.  For flu/fever/colds, try eating some oranges high in vitamin C.  Also a bowl of phở laced with pepper helps you sweat out the impurities and it warms you up inside.  Boil some water and put your feet in it (after it cools to a hot but bearable temperature) for an hour.

Of course in some cases, pills are unavoidable.  But those cases should be after you've seen a doctor (preferably holding a license from a Western country in order to prescribe Western medicine).  Again, it's like playing Russian Roulette.

THD!
I think even illiterate people know about simple tabs for common cold/flu/fever whether it is allopathic or herbal medicine. So we should believe that 'poor' pharmacists :D
I don't prefer to consult them for serious sicknesses!
Actually self treatment is not advisable but here better we treat ourselves for minimum simple sicknesses.
Who spent time for healthcare by drinking dry ginger coffee or oranges? All of us are running!!

Dry ginger coffee eh?  I should look into that.  I have to admit, even the food here is suspicious since I read so many stories of people doctoring the food.  Oranges that look like, as well as labeled, made in USA, were in fact, made in China.  I need to find a plot of land to grow my own food, oranges and ginger.

Sad for you that you must always be running, but that's life in the big city.

Peanut_oreo

WOW. Thats a lot of useful info guys.

charmavietnam

Yup, that's right!
Run continues...
Yeah, drinking chemical compounds is better than Chinese apple:D
Actually that's a home remedy for common cold, fever and flu. I forced to drink whenever I sick in India. My mom is expert in making that herbal medicine. Do you know brown color sugar made from palm tree? That's the main ingredient. Together put some black pepper and dried ginger. Need to boil with water. Drink hot!
Even though piercing feel, 2 times enough!
Also she make a creamy drink with the above brown color sugar(sorry for the exact vocabulary) and cumin seed paste, for cough! I tried many Allopathic/Homeopathic/Ayurvedic medicines for my cough related to common cold. No effect! Only my mom's 'special' medicine work fine:D

The only cure for the flu or cold is time. There is no other cure for flu/cold. You can only relieve the symptoms of flu/cold.

So cheapest option would be bed rest. You don't want your body expending energy other than fighting the flu/cold so bedrest until you feel well. Drink plenty of fluid to flush out your system of toxins. Eat/drink lots of juice or fruit preferably high in vitamin C to boost your immune system to fight off the flu/cold.

It's that simple. For home remedies I just squeeze lots of lemon/lime (vitamin C) mixed with boiling water, ginger and honey for the sore throat.

Guess there are no such thing as "sweet" medicine

Good advice coming from a Canuck.  You guys are the pros at experiencing and fighting off the flu/colds.  Starting to snow in Calgary yet or are you just seeing maple leaves starting to fall off the trees?  It's been years since I passed through Calgary.

This year has been unusually warm. Everyday it's 25+ degree celsius whereas years previous you'd see snow on the mountains already. I just came back from hiking through the mountains no snow at all.

It's too warm for the leafs to change colours. Hoping it continues to be this warm until I leave for Vietnam.
